How much does it cost to build your own garden?

This is the big question that often arises: “How much will my garden cost me?”.

If you hire a landscaper to do it, you know this in advance thanks to the estimate.

But if you want to do it yourself, it's immediately more complicated.

However, it's human to want to know what you're getting yourself into.

Find out how much your garden will cost before starting work.

If you search the Internet, you will find testimonials on forums.

People who say they spent €500, €1000, €3000… to develop their own garden.

But even if you know what they got for that price, that doesn't mean you want the same thing.
The same agreements.
The same equipment.
The same materials.

Each garden is unique and its layout depends on its owner.

You can do many different things.
According to your tastes.
Your wishes.

So testimonials and averages mean nothing!

So, you may be tempted to define what you want.

All right.

And to precisely study the cost of each element that will end up in your garden.

This is less good.

Because it will take a long time to do it.

And all the while your garden isn't making any progress.

Furthermore, what is valid at the moment you make all your predictions in detail will no longer necessarily be valid 6 months later, when you are finally ready to start.

The tile model selected may have changed in price. Or even, it will no longer be available! And we will have to start the work again.

Here's what I suggest:

First, see broadly what you want in your garden.

That is to say the different structures: a terrace for eating, a vegetable garden, children's games

This allows you to know what you will have in your garden and to think about where to distribute these spaces on your land.

You need to make sure there is room for everything!

Then, list what is needed for each arrangement (building, furniture, equipment, etc.).

Without going into details.

Just to make sure you don't forget anything when you take action.

For example: you want a terrace space for dining, you can list that you will have to create a terrace, buy furniture (table and chairs), a shading system… But without specifying the necessary materials or the model of each equipment.

Now you've finished the job.

You know you'll have it in your backyard.

And it ended up being pretty quick to make.

Then, you will choose the layout with the highest priority.

The one you want to get first.

And at that point you get into the details of this agreement.

For example, you know that your priority is your terrace for dining.

List the materials needed to build it.

Choose a model of table and chairs.

Etc…

Get the total cost to create this part.

And there, two possibilities.

You have enough savings – do the work.

You don't have enough money right now: you're waiting to have enough saved up.

There's no point in doing anything else in the meantime.

Because otherwise you will spend money and postpone even longer the moment when you can carry out this priority development.

Once this part is finished, you move on to the next layout.

Always in order of priority.

Soon.

Your garden is created gradually.

And you can enjoy it even if it's not finished.

So yes, you won't know the total cost of your garden in advance.

But does it really matter?

What's the point of knowing what a particular development will cost?

Either way, you know what you ultimately want in your garden.

You know you'll make all the changes you listed at the beginning.

Making them a priority makes sense.

So creating your garden at the pace of the money you have available makes sense.

It doesn't matter if you need 3 months, 6 months or 2 years to get everything.

And at least your garden is moving forward, it's being created.

From the first installation carried out, you can already enjoy your exterior!

And this changes everything.

On the other hand, there are some traps to avoid:

– Make sure all your wishes are real. And don't make arrangements you'll never use.

– Define your priorities correctly.

– Make sure the equipment you choose is suitable for the use you will make of it. And thus eliminate useless or superfluous expenses.

– Avoid making overly complex constructions when it is not necessary.

– Be well organized during the work so that your garden does not turn into a battlefield.

– Etc…

I'll explain the method for creating your garden yourself, spending as little as possible and organizing yourself to carry out the work in stages, without falling into traps, on this page (click here).
